Carlisle Musical Society - What a Swell Party, Morton Manor

Compere Harry King

Musical Director Janice Jackson

This show was a terrific tribute to the music of great composers George Gershwin and Cole Porter and featured some of most famous songs from their musical theatre careers.

Janice Jackson directed the company with a rousing opening of ‘Another Opening, Another Show, and this was followed by famous solo and ensemble numbers, by a talented company.

The show was performed in Morton Manor, with a cabaret style seating arrangement which worked very well. Harry King was an excellent compere, he added his great knowledge of the songs to his introductions.

The highlights of the evening for me were Helene and Jeff Philips performing Let’s Fall In Love, a comic masterpiece and Musical Director Janice, singing Embraceable You. She is a very talented lady.

To be honest there wasn’t a weak link in the show and it moved along at a cracking pace, it was thoroughly enjoyed by an enthusiastic audience.

The finale was ‘Blow Gabriel Blow’, from ‘Anything Goes’, a fitting end, plus encore to a lovely evening. Thanks to CMS for a great concert, the composers would have been well pleased, I’m sure. The trip back to West Cumbria was no trouble, whistling the well known tunes whilst driving home.
